Default Luckiest number - or unlucky for some?

One of the great mysteries of the National Lottery is how to choose your 6 numbers.

Put too much thought into this and it can do your head in.

I see in the Guardian that some university statisticians are worried that the draws may not be completely random - You thought it was a lot of balls, but there's one you can count on | UK News | The Observer

The problem with such information is this: If the number 38 is genuinely more likely to be drawn than any other number - should you include it in your own 6 numbers or not?

On the one hand - yes, because it is more likely to come up, but on the other hand - no, because so many people are likely to choose it. If your numbers do therefore come up, you are more likely to have to share it.

What could be worse than finally winning the jackpot and then having to share it with 2,000 other people?!

Just a thought to get your minds buzzing!

    Exclamation Fixed?

Just reading your post regarding the lotto not being completely random.
    Shouldn't we all be worried?

I have long held the view that the lotto isn't random and I believe it is fixed to favour certain parts of the country.

If you look at the National Lotteries own website you will see that winners often come from the Scottish Highlands or the midlands. If they do come from down South then it is usually Kent or on the rare occasions that we get a London winner then they are from the better parts, for example Ealing.

I refuse to put another penny on it until I see a substantial winner from East London or some of the poorer boroughs. In these areas the lotto has never really lost it's popularity, yet there are never any winners from here. (East End)

Not so long ago the National Lottery was gushing that the luckiest place to play your lotto was Ilford. Oh really? I have not seen one big winner from there. I think they only say it so us mugs who live in poorer areas keep playing.

Can the lotto truly be fixed to favour certain areas or not?

The national "lotto" cant be fixed...Im sure William hill progressive keno IS however.

Why cant i play continuous??? I suspect its because they change the algorithms running the program after you hit the 10 bets [MAX] button.

Am I just sceptical or do other "punters" feel this too???

Unless you believe in conspiracy theories I would be fairly sure that the National Lotto cannot be fixed. Although the fact that the majority of big million winners seem to be ex-cons and rude boys does leave a bitter taste.

Yeah, or won by really boring idiots who tell the press that they will be going back to work in the factory even after a 14 million win!

Please tell me you aren't actually being serious with this post?

Why on earth would Camelot favour people from the highlands to win the lottery. How do you know that someone from the East End hasnt already won a substantial amount of money already, its been going for 10+ years and you can remain annonymous if you win you know.

The lottery isnt fixed, its a random game with no skill what so ever. There is no way of playing certain numbers or patterns to try and win!

ITS RANDOM, GET WITH IT PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So are you saying everyone that wins in London ALWAYS remains anonymous? Why?

Check their website and count how many winners that live in London compared with Cardiff, or Manchester. If this is a genuinely random game then there should be more winners coming from London or other major cities as there are substantially more players, especially from the poorer areas.

If this is a genuinely random game then how do you explain some winners hitting the jackpot at least twice. What are the odds of hitting the jackpot once (you would think they would quit) then playing a DIFFERENT set of numbers at a DIFFERENT time in the same location and hitting the jackpot again? The odds must be astronomical but no its happened on several occassions and guess what - none of those winners live in major UK city.

I don't believe a company would put it's trust in 7 out of 49 plastic balls falling out of a mechanical device - if that's easy then why aren't there more lotteries? If the magician David Copperfield can give the impression he can fly over the Grand Canyon by sheer will power how hard is it to make the least common set of seven balls to fall out of machine on national TV?

And another thing you should remember:
    Lotto rapist if BAD publicity;
    Lotto granny is GOOD publicity.
