Default What are the odds of winning this

    Hi

I've heard the odds of matching 6 numbers from 49 being about 14,000,000 to one (ish)

Just wondering if you only had to match 5 numbers from 49. Can any tell me the odds?

Its a free competition that you win £1000 if you get 5. Just wondering what the chances are.

    Cheers

    Mal

here is the odds of ever winning the lotto as you no there 14,000.000to 1
in other words imagine the 14.000.000 million balls going around in a manchine lets say youve brought 1000 tickets your chance of winning is 1 now in 13.999.000 in other words still no chance ?
its like you going to place a bet in the bookies there 10 horses in the race you back one horse the bookie in the other hand has 9 horeses in the race you only have one ? who has the greatest chance of winning out of you and him ? his odds are 9 times greater than your ?
just like the lottery the odds are well stacked in there favour

Doesn't matter about how many people enter, its about hitting 6 numbers?

Hyperthetically, the odds are supposed to always be in the public favour for the lotto, even though previous leaks of 'could be' scams have been foiled, on paper when the lotto started, was supposed to be for the people and the people only, seems Camelot like to line their own pockets too imo

That's not correct to say the bookmakers chances are 9 times greater if you back one horse in a 10 runner race, as different horses have different chances. Take a look at an SP stats table sometime, it is quite phenomenal how accurate SP's are, especially on favourties (a slight % to the book makers but Evens shots win 48% of the time, which undermines your example completely )
