    Default Las vegas Megahhhhhhhh thread.

Quite a few Vegas threads lately and in my experience there are a lot of questions being asked about Vegas from people who have not been before. You can't seem to get good info about Vegas unless you ask people who have been before. This thread should be especially useful since we are all poker players and probably want the same things out of Vegas. Even if you've been to Vegas before then this thread should help even the vegas veterans since there is so much to see/do over there.

If you have been to Vegas before it is a crime not to add to this thread.

Add to this thread if you have an experience with:
    • Good/bad/cheap/expensive food
    • Good/bad shows
    • Hotels you have stayed at
    • Experience days out (ie grand canyon visit)
    • Bars
    • Clubs
    • Poker rooms- cash/tourneys/standard of play
    • Other nonsense such as health, weather etc.

If you want to know about strip clubs then I suggest you start PM'ing people, I wouldn't know anything about these places.

Rules to keep the thread clean: No linking to other sites unless it provides discounts to Las Vegas, I want info in this thread to be first hand from you.

    Food:

I can't be too much help here even though eating out is one of my favourite hobbies.

    Daniel Boulud at the Wynn

Quite expensive- $50 and up for a steak but I will never forget the steak I had here, the best I've EVER had. There is a big waterfall on one side of the restaurant and a mini-show runs every 30 or 60 minutes. The bar there was also fantastic, it was quite private but the cocktails were out of this world (expensive too). The barman really enjoyed what he did and therefore you had drinks to suit.

    Mix at Mandalay bay

I don't remember this place too well as I was jetlagged to hell, to prove that there was an earthquake at the beginning of our meal and I didn't notice, even the glass balls hanging from the ceiling were rocking about all over the place and I couldn't figure out what was going on.

The setting was fantastic though and the food was very good, I hope DaMatrix can help as he ate with me here. I remember this place being semi-expensive but I did not pay for the bill so do not remember.

Paradise garden buffet at the Flamingo

They do buffet all day here, I think breakfast finished at midday. We went here most days and if you look around you should find 2-for-1 vouchers for this place, you should be given some if you stay at a harrah's hotel (Harrah's are a chain of hotels in vegas, flamingo being one of them). The food was up to standard for a buffet but you could probably find cheaper if you looked hard enough, I seem to remember the breakfast buffet being about $15 here but drinks are free and you get to look at all the cool fish in the pond outside of the restaurant.

If you ever fancy some fast food then across the road from the Wynn near Treasure Island there is a shopping mall with a floor dedicated to fast food. It's redic cheap and quite tasty but I only ate there once when hungover. The servings are BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG. Ask for a promo sized soft drink at mbarro's.

    Flights:

It used to be just Virgin that flew from Gatwick but fortunately BA fly from Heathrow too. BA > Virgin. Book as EARLY as possible, typically about 2 months before the flight the prices increase daily and quite drastically too. Fly direct only as going non-direct will only save you about £100 and flying direct saves about 4-5 hours. You will be horribly jet-lagged either way and adding extra time to the flight will make you feel a lot worse.

    Shows:

I saw cirque de soleil with DaMatrix when I first went. This is the best show I've seen in Vegas (seen 4 now) but it is also the most expensive, I think tickets were in the region of $100. Don't EVER pay the full price at any shows, 2-for-1 stores are situated all over Vegas so make sure you use them.

Blue man group was very average, if you must see it then do. I was expecting it to be a lot better with all the hype it's gotten but there you go. I won't spoil it too much but it was VERY RANDOM. About $60 a ticket.

Defending the caveman is pretty good for the price, I think tickets were about $20. It's a show for couples though, going with a group of lads would feel very strange indeed.

    Hotels:

From my experience all hotels are good in vegas they just offer different things.

    Mandalay bay

DaMatrix won a free trip to vegas so this room was paid for, I wouldn't have stayed in a deluxe suite room otherwise. Gigantic room with a bath you could swim in. Tv in the bathroom, living room etc. Very nice but probably very expensive $200 a night? and Mandalay bay is in the worst location on the strip as it is right at the bottom.

    Mirage

Has a cool volcano show every hour, room was ideal/nice and the casino is pretty nice too. I think rooms were at $90 a night.

    Caesars Palace

This place is huge. I got lost trying to find my room when I first got there (took 45 minutes to find it), I can't describe the size but it's something like a large village/small town. Got a slightly upgraded room from the uber basic. Room was large and had a jacuzzi bath tub. I stayed here over July 4th so it was more expensive but I would assume this room would cost around $140 a night otherwise. The swimming facilities were fantastic, lots of places to sunbathe and many big pools to choose from with a cool roman theme to them. They also had a private area for people over 21 but I didn't get the chance to go there.

    Encore at the Wynn

If you want balla you go to the Encore/Wynn. The basic rooms were given 5-star/3 diamond just to give you an idea. The room was laid out really cool with the most amazing view of the strip ever. Room was $150 a night but a bit more during weekends. It's really posh there and I almost felt out of place, I think older people generally stay there as the location isn't fantastic (20 minute walk to the center of the strip). Swimming facilities were ok, I think they had two pools but they weren't huge by any means.

When finding a hotel, location is crucial, get anywhere that is on the strip and near flamingo/mirage/Caesars/Bellagio.

    Days out/experiences:

    Grand canyon

Pictures don't do this place any justice so I won't put one up. Was okay to go once, I won't go again but it's pretty jaw dropping trying to work out the pure scale of the place. You can probably do this for $80 a head, people will try to sell you this on the strip non-stop.

    Indoor skydiving

This is located round the back of the Encore.

I'm too much of a pussy to do the real thing so I did this instead. Don't go in the height of the summer when it's a billion degrees because the wind tunnel is just air sucked from outside so you have 120mph winds blowing onto you whilst wearing a big suit with air pockets. Not great. Still, the experience was great and was a weird feeling for sure. I forget the price but it was less than $100 for two.

    Bars:

    Margaritaville

My favourite place on the whole strip is Margaritaville. Gigantic drinks, bloody strong. Atmosphere is fantastic here but it might be a bit on the pricey side if getting hammered isn't your thing. I'm not going to tell you much about this place so just go, it's next door to flamingos and directly opposite Caesars palace. Heres an example of the scale of drinks there:

I don't seem to remember many other bars, not a surprise really as I was always getting hammered.

    Poker rooms:

    Bellagio

The bigger games run here if you are interested. I played quite a bit of 10/20nl there on my first trip but it was just a table full of regulars the whole time. A few tourists and fish came a long but they never lasted long. If you want big games then they are here, but I found it quite tough and unless you play the bigger games then apparently the staff can be quite rude. I'd say avoid this place.

As a general rule, the smaller the casino, the softer the games. Hard rock cafe and hooters and the softest 1/2 games I'd ever seen, I could beat them by playing every hand whilst hammered off my face (which I did).

    Other nonsense

If you can't cope with extreme heat then avoid the end of June/July/August. It felt like someone was blowing a hairdryer in my face when I stepped off the plane. Always carry a bottle of water round with you, often people are selling it on the street for $1. Take some kind of lip balm because the air is very very dry, there are often weather warnings during summer when the wind picks up and the humidity drops below 5%. It dries anything that is exposed pretty instantly.

I'll add more when I remember, I didn't include any info about clubs yet as I could never remember leaving them.

It's annoying that I have enough money to afford this, but for me it would be pointless going as I am under 21. It's amusing how the hotels aren't as expensive as you would think.

This was my room at the Flamingo. It was better than expected. Quite spacious with a large bathroom. it had a weird ass shower and I had to get someone to come and show me how to work it. Think it was around $50 a night and fantastic location mid strip. It had a decent casino, fun cardroom with lots of cash prizes for quads and better. Tournies sucked as they took a big rake. I only played one which was a $60 buyin and I came 2nd for $850 so I did a hit and run and never played there again. I flew from bristol - its cheaper flying via NYC (£401 it cost in June 09) and really isnt much of a pain, especially if you are with someone and have a deck of cards, or you can play holdem on the Continental Airlines inflight entertainment system.

The view from my room. Not down the strip, but not bad.

Check the evangelical tv shows. They are lols. Benn Hinn FTW.

They had decent gardens which had Flamingoes which was pretty cool. Everyone loves Flamingoes, right?. One scared the shit out of me one day when I was online and a bird crept up and jumped into the floor to ceiling right next to me.

This is breakfast. Eggs Benedict with Hash Brown I think. Their Hash Browns arent like ours - they are more like minced potato with onion cooked loosely in oil. Actually, maybe that is like ours. Portions are massive. I tended to eat Brekkie then I'd be full till dinner so had two meals a day.

Rico who came out with me. He is really into poker and is the only one of my non-poker friends who caught the bug. Check the size of that danish pastry.

Get freebies. Get all the comp cards - I think Total Rewards cover loads of casinos on the strip. I got enough points for a few free meals plus this rather nasty tshirt. Bills is where I played most of my cash as they had a 25c/50c game with a fun bonus if you got AA or KK carcked (you got $100 or $50). Bills is a good place on the main strip to play all kinds of games for lower table limits.

There are buses that can ferry you around. Chains of casinos have free buses between their buildings. Buses have aircon and most people tipped the driver a buck. In this instance though the bus had 50 seats and we were 50 and 51 in the queue so had to get a cab to the Rio instead. We made a mistake on the first day of seeing the Rio nearby and thinking we could walk there. Don't even entertain the thought. You walk for ages and ages and your destination is still as far away as it ever was.

    Me at the WSOP

The room they use for the WSOP (its otherwise used for conventions) is vast but everything is well ordered. When you buyin you get your table and seat numbers and are told which area of the room (eg AMAzon room, area blue) to go to so everything is chilled on the tournament day itself.

There are pro players everywhere - I like how in other walks of life celebs get shielded from the plebs but with poker players there isn't that barrier. I saw so many famous names I lost count.

    Hotels:

We arrived on Saturday night at about 2am and the hotel was heaving. By midday Sunday it had really emptied out. American friends tell me that most people got to Vegas for 2/3 days over the weekend and the prices reflect this. Fri and Sat nights can cost over twice as much as other nights. So you need to weigh up what you are interested in: expensive rooms, lots of drunken fish but everywhere heaving (maybe waiting longer for a seat at a cash table) or cheaper rooms, quieter times, less fish.

    Non-gambling:

Concur with Scrote: Grand Canyon great (go by glass bottom plane - its weird) but wouldn't go again.

Few doors down from Tropicana is a huge games room with every shoot-em up, driving game and a climbing wall. One price for 1/2 or 1 day and unlimited play. Had to drag my son out after about 8 hours!!!

I tell everyone about our horse ride in the desert - it was amazing. Driven out to a local reservation where we were met by a genuine cowboy who looked just like Sam Elliot and who had a real gun. We rode out at about 4pm and hacked round while the sun set. I was even a witness to two people getting married on horseback (how Vegas is that). We came back in the dark to a huge camp fire and meal. My son couldn't ride but enjoyed every minute.

    Shows:

I thought Blue Man group was fun and deffo randomn. Saw a couple of other shows which were not famous and not remarkable (one was a magician, other was acrobats I think).

Tip about using the half price booths for shows is spot on. Also you can join nearly every casino and get a gift/tokens/decks of cards/vouchers/raffle tickets. If you are cruising around anyway it can be worth looking at what's on offer. In MGM I got a slots ticket that paid out $20 for me, all for nothing.
Sam: Sock, don't do anything stupid.

Sock: Sam, I am almost certainly going to do something stupid. Its in my blood - you know that.

Planet Hollywood give a nice set of vouchers. The best was a free $25 matched bet on blackjack. I played one hand and won - a free $25 just for walking through the door. Beware of all the locals wandering round asking for your vouchers though, you don't want to give the ones up which they'll ask for.

this is a reflection on previous trips as you've all read enough of the latest trip.

hotels - in previous trips to vegas, I have stayed at TI, Venetian, monte carlo and Aladdin (now PH) and all of them were awesome and worthy of taking the GF / wife. The IP where I stayed this time was great to go with a mate but I wouldn't take the wife there.

trips - hire a car and do america the proper way. Best day trip (esp in summer) is to death valley and furness creek. This is one of the hottest dryest places places on earth, but it is a truly fantastic surreal place to visit. You can visit zabrieski point (as in the film) and badwater basin (-275 ft above sea level).

I also recommend a 2 day trip to the Grand Canyon by car. The route takes you via the Hoover Dam as well as some fantastic scenery and some real dodgy looking outposts (fans of "the hitcher", "natural born killers" etc will love this). The drive to the GC takes 4-5 hours but with good company absolutely flies by. The village just outside GC is called Tusayon and has a fantastic steakhouse (with a superb range of beers) as well as loads of reasonably priced but not cheap (as in scuttle a whore) motels that are only 5 mins drive to the GCNP. By taking the 2 day option drive you have time to take the free bus around the different views as well as hiking down the "Bright Angel Trail" (4 hours down, lunch, 6 hours up) which is awesome. I personally have a problem (for eco reasons) with these flights/choppers that take you to the GC and whilst taking a car there yourself hardly represents an ideal moral solution, I believe it is much more fun. Also, If you can check out of your hotel before going to GC and then come back to Vegas for a single night before leaving then you can get great upgrades at ANY hotel e.g. we got $30 from basic room to valentine hottub honeymoon suite in the Monte Carlo, purely because we were staying one night only.

Another good spot and 2 day trip is Zion National Park (200 miles north from Vegas). The best bit about this is that its in Utah and mormon country. The alcohol rules are bizarre in this state and it is like visiting another country. We went to a "fully licenced" restaurant and when asked if we wanted any drinks, were told to get them ourselves from the bar as they weren't allowed to carry them. I LOL'd and didn't leave a tip (but tipped the barman). The park is spectacular and the hiking (if you like that sort of thing) is great.

Vegas is such a great city. I lived there over this past summer (2009.) There is so much to do there where do I start?

Well cheap good located hotels are:
    o Imperial Palace
    o Flamingo
    o Bally's

All those are right next to one another and are center strip. If you have some money to spend on a room then try:
    o Ceasar's Palace
    o Balligio
    o Wynn

Remember you get what you pay for in terms of rooms. Weekends are more expensive and around holidays. 1 Jan, 4 July, 25 Dec.

It gets really hot in the summer and can snow in the winter so be warned.

    Poker:

Virtually any major hotel has poker now, usually the $1-$2 blind No Limit variation, if you want something else then you might have to look harder. Omaha is a dieing game. Wynn might have a $10/$20 or a $15/$30, Mirage might have a $10/$20, Excalibur might have a $0.50/$1.00 on an automatic machine, etc... If you want big games go to the more expensive casinos: Ceasar's, Venetian, Wynn, Bellagio, etc.

A thing to remember the action is better in the summer time (esp during the WSOP) and get's a bit stale around the winter months. Look into if there is a trade show goin on when you are there as the action can pick up a bit with all the tourists coming in.

The off strip Casino are filled with more locals and thus are tighter (on avg.) This includes:
    o Orleans
    o Red Rock
    o Green Valley
    o South Point

EX: $1-$2 blind NL on strip if you open raise to $7 UTG you might get 5+ callers on a 10 handed game. Off strip UTG a $7 will get you maybe 3 callers at most. SO, on strip you (usually) need to raise to a higher number pre than offstrip.

    Food:

Everywhere is nice, and again you get what you pay for.

    Trips:

Don't buy the helicopter rides with out really negotiating your price, or just skip it really. And you don't need a car you can walk or taxi the strip/city.

    Strip Clubs:
    o The Spearment Rhino
    o Sapphire

Remember you can negotiate some pricing here too with the girls, and if you want a little better treatment or some better prices on bottles (this goes for other clubs too) don't forget to tip the manager.
