Me and a group of 3 others are looking at buying a share in a racehorse, had a look on the net and basically want to know if anyone has had any good/bad experiences with it.
We are looking to use it as a hobby rather than a way of making money. Basically:
- Looking to spend a combined maximum of £200 a month.
- Prefer a lightly raced horse with potential rather than an older horse with wins/places
- The trainer ideally based in midlands/SE. Ideally sending its stable to Fakenham/Huntingdon etc
Anyone with any experiences / advice would be welcome.
Regards
I used to own 1/8th of a horse called Mighty Max, but I think it's in McDonalds now.
It really is money down the drain unless you can get a few decent gambles out of it or it wins some decent races.
Depends whether you have money to burn.![]()
Cheers. Obviously we're going into it knowing we aren't going to be the owners of the next derby winner :-) , but at the same time we hope to get something which at least gives us some hope.
May I ask how much you paid per month? We are aiming to pay a combined £150 for 5% - 10% ownership etc
Hi John,
I think it was about £80 a month, although that was about 6 years ago.![]()
called Kiama. 3 yo Filly in training with Hughie Morrison. Costs about 950 for the year. Been really unlucky with her this season as she has had 4 2nds and a 3rd. She should get stronger over the winter and we are hoping for a good season as a 4 yo.
I found out about the syndicate through
http://www.britishhorseracing.com/home.asp
If you go into the Ownership section you can do a search for syndicates based on location and price.
Had some great days out at the races and in the race where she came 2nd at Goodwood we still managed to take over the winners bar and nick all the food and drink.
Andrew, without being too nosey, how does the prize money get shared out if you win?
I guess from the initial prize, the trainer gets some, the jockey gets some, then the owners get some which is shared between you all? How many are in your syndicate?
My share in it is a 1/20th. Prize money will be shared out at the end of the syndicate when she will either be sold or go back to the original stud farm and then we will get a cut from that as well. I am not sure of the exact figures on percentages that the trainer and jockey gets to be honest although I dont expect it to be a huge amount, with most going to the owner(s)
I joined it with a view to not getting any return at all, just for the enjoyment of the racing. Makes a trip 100 times better when you have got a vested interest.
Was looking at other partnerships and found a good one based in Newbury called the Heart of the south Partnership. They seem to have some decent horses running. However the website didn't show any costs.
as an option....a greyhound works out a lot cheaper to keep and is also a lot of fun to own
you can get a very high grade pup for the same sort of price as a share in a racehorse
I went to the dogs at swindon a couple of weeks ago and was thinking about how owning a greyhound works. Does anyone have any info on that?
you can get a pup thats never run or a dog thats been graded.....obviously the breeding of the pup governs the cost but they range from around 400 - 2000 for full ownership, you can find adverts in the racing post or by talking to a trainer, depending where ya live theres probably a kennels somewhere or a local track that are quite easy to find and are usually very helpful.
