    Default A new prize?

Something someone said on the luck/skill thread got me thinking. With the epic WSOP three-month league coming up, it'd be nice to have something to maintain interest now that we've got no more exciting monthly finals (after this month's) to look forward to until 2007. Wouldn't it be a nice idea to have a prize - nothing vast - not only for the leaderboard champion every month (which too often translates as "person from Weston who shlepped to the most games" ), but also for the "Player Of The Month", ie the person who scored the best ratio of points-per-game-played? (And no, before anyone asks that wouldn't be me this month.)

Obviously there'd have to be a minimum number of games played (maybe five or something) to qualify, so that whoever won the month's first games couldn't just sit back with a "perfect" ratio, but it'd be good to reflect quality of play as well as just persistence. Of course, the league's all about bums on seats and getting people to play as much as possible, but there'd always be motivation to turn up since you'd need the points anyway to qualify for the finals, plus unless you've won five games out of five there'd always be a chance to improve your ratio by playing another one and winning it.

Maybe it could replace the "top ten draw" prize, which is just a lottery, or run alongside it for extra thrills, or whatever. Just a thought.

errr with the leagues changing over to 4 regions in the South west in September i don't understand the comment?
At the end of the 3 months 4 trophys will be presented to the region winners plus the Manchester winner.

As a extra prize we were going to make everyone qualify to play in the $1,000 freeroll but in the end decided to open it up to all LPL players who played 3 or more games in a month.

I have had an idea where we could run a Regions Cup in the South West made up from 4 teams but i am not sure on the format.
Qualification was going to be top 8 players from each region plus 2 reserves come together in October and play for the Cup?

In Manchester we could just call in the Manchester Cup where you need to qualify in the top 40 or 50 to get a chance to play for it? the winner would display the trophy at the pub that they play in..

That might keep the interest going?..

Suggestions on a post card please.....

Oh, I see the link now. The idea still stands, though - in fact, I'd say it's even stronger. Having a "Player Of The Month" would help link the four separate leagues together a little, and the leaderboard prize is a bit dead now.

I think the points ratio idea is good, and would be usefull.

Without entering the debate over prizes formats etc, can we just have the point ratio displayed alongside the leaderboard. This is usefull to players charting there progression, and whilst we understand its bums on seats*, I think that at around this point in the month its easy to understand players who are in the midground positions giving up a little, (ie you cant win the league, and your definately in the final). If you had a points ratio on display and could chart yourself against opponenets you credit with respect then you would have an extra incentive.

I assume this is at no cost or real work to anyone other than setting up, as the info is already there?

    * Manchester looks set to explode with numbers. We had 5 tables at Didsbury last night, and there were several onlookers who are interested in returning next week. No doubt in part due to the final on Sunday and the return of a few students to campus early. The guy from Steak & Kebab, (restuarant next door), was discussing the viability of a sunday afternoon game in his function room last night. Kro bar is attracting a few newcomers week on week, and when the students are back in town I think it will be hard to get in. Bramhall always does well, and the new venue will no doubt share some of that.

yeah, the two nights i am running do lok to be taking off quite a lot... lucky me, haahaa- not that it is because i am a nice guy or anything- quite the opposite- i think ppl love to be shouted at and insulted.. treat em mean...

also i had to shave a few minutes of most of the blinds- started at 20 minutes and went to 15 at the first chip up... i think kro might have to be the same until they statr opening til 12 again

we'll see anyway- should be a good laugh and gfood for those players who come down and qualify... points a go-go

Yeah it would be good to see a points/ratio thing somewhere. You could play 6 games in a month, win them all, and still be far down the leaderboard.

Would be nice to see good play/results recognised somehow as opposed to recognising who has spent the most on beer and petrol in the month!

if you just want to chart your own progression as far as your game goes then surely you can do that just by looking at your points. You know how many games you've played, whether you hit the points etc. For example, I know that each month I average more points per game than most people !!!! hehehehehe

I don't know Mike, some people just can't be satisfied !!!

Calculating your own ratio is simple enough, comparing it the the rest of the league is not possible as you dont have the data to do it. Yes you can do an assessment but not accurately.

And the idea of having it on display as a yardstick would, in my opinion, drive people on a bit more come midmonth when they have dropped away from the top spots and are already assured of final place.

Yep. I mean, I think I'm pretty safe for the final, but my luck's been so dismal this month that there seems little point in turning up for the last seven or eight games, since every point I've earned has been a bloody-minded grind-out and a rest might be nice. Something to play for might make it more tempting.
